Charge-Off Disputes

A charge-off means the lender wrote the debt off as a loss, but you may still owe it. Charge-offs can be disputed when the balance, dates, status, or ownership is reported wrong or can't be verified. We review each charge-off on all three reports and challenge the details that look inaccurate. An accurate charge-off can be reported for up to seven years.

How we handle it

Our charge-offs process

  1. Read the full account history

We check the balance, the date of first delinquency, and the status on every bureau.

  2. Spot mismatches

A charge-off that was sold should show a zero balance with the original lender. Balances reported twice are a common error.

  3. Challenge in writing

With your approval, we dispute inaccurate details with the bureaus and the creditor.

  4. Plan your next steps

We explain how charge-offs affect your goals and what to focus on while disputes run.

We do not remove accurate, current, and verifiable information.

Charge-Offs: common questions

If any part of the charge-off is inaccurate, such as the balance, the dates, or the status, dispute it with the bureaus and the creditor. If it's accurate, it can stay for up to seven years from the original delinquency.

Credit repair can challenge charge-offs that appear inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable. An accurate, current, and verifiable charge-off can't legally be removed.

Usually yes. A charge-off is an accounting step by the lender; the debt can still be collected by the lender or a company that buys it.

Once a charge-off is sold to a collector, the original lender's account generally should show a zero balance. If both the lender and the collector show a balance, that's worth reviewing.

Paying it updates the status to paid, which some lenders view better, but the account can still be reported for the rest of its reporting period. How much a score changes varies.
