Collection Account Disputes

Collection accounts can be disputed when they are inaccurate, duplicated, past the reporting period, or can't be verified by the collector. We review each collection across all three bureaus, challenge the ones that look wrong, and can send debt validation requests to collectors. An accurate collection can be reported for up to seven years from the original delinquency.

How we handle it

Our collections process

  1. List every collection

We line up each collection account with the original creditor, dates, and balances on all three reports.

  2. Check for errors

We look for duplicates, wrong balances, wrong dates, and accounts that don't belong to you.

  3. Dispute and validate

We dispute with the bureaus and, where appropriate, ask the collector to validate the debt.

  4. Report back monthly

Your monthly statement shows every letter we sent and every response.

We do not remove accurate, current, and verifiable information.

Collections: common questions

Dispute any collection that is inaccurate, duplicated, or can't be verified with the bureaus reporting it, and you can ask the collector to validate the debt. An accurate collection can legally remain for up to seven years from the original delinquency date.

Credit repair can challenge collections that appear inaccurate, incomplete, outdated, or unverifiable. Accurate, current, and verifiable collections can't legally be removed by anyone.

Not automatically. A paid collection is usually updated to show a zero balance or paid status, but it can still be reported for the rest of its reporting period.

It's a written request asking a debt collector to show that the debt is yours and the amount is correct. The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act gives you this right.

When a debt is sold, both the original creditor and the collector may report it. The original account should show it was transferred or sold; if both show an active balance, that's worth disputing.

The seven-year reporting period runs from the original delinquency date, and selling the debt doesn't restart it. If a collection shows a newer delinquency date than it should, that can be disputed.
